My New Year’s Resolutions (Save 7 lives: ✅) got a big shot in the arm last week when I registered to become an organ and tissue donor. If you do just one good thing this week … let it be this.
It takes a minute or two and there is no risk, hassle or obligation, except to ask your family to honour your wishes after your death. Only 5% of South Africans are donors, which is why countless children and adults die waiting in line for a life-saving transplant. Please become a donor.

Once you have done that, why don’t you build on the positive vibes by treating yourself to a ticket to see Alan Committie’s Comedy Gold, which is showing at the Theatre on the Bay until February 8.
Alan Committie IS pure comedy Gold, says (the one and only) Kate Normington. “He is comedy on legs, steroids and espresso deluxe. His energy puts Iron Men to shame. He even dances at the end, really well, I might add. What a treat to watch somebody so completely in control of the game. Go and see him!
“You will feel restored and positive afterwards. I think that is the thing about Alan, nothing negative can survive in his ambit. He squeezes it out hermetically. He is a treat to give yourself at the end of a long year, and you will suddenly feel that all things are possible.”
Talking about dancing, to this song or the next one …
There is a Silent Sunset Disco at Clifton 1st Beach on January 18 from 6pm to 9pm. Put on your headphones and boogie to your choice of three ‘sizzling hot’ DJs playing a selection of tunes on different channels.
A Silent Disco is one of those crazy-fun things you really should try. Go on! Lose your inhibitions and dance to your own choice of tune. Seriously, though, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.
Bookings are open for Maynardville’s fabulous summer season. Treat yourself to a night of Spirits, tempests, magic, moonlight
If movies are more your thing, there is no better place than Labia on Orange. We love its cool indie vibes. Showing this week, alongside the very highly recommended Wicked (which I can’t even bear the thought of) is A Complete Unknown, a biographical musical drama about Bob Dylan starring the marvellous Timothee Chalamet.
Set in the New York music scene of the early 1960s, A Complete Unknown follows the 19-year-old Dylan’s meteoric rise as a folk singer to becoming a worldwide sensation, culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll party at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
This one looks perfect for the quirky, old-fashioned, slightly dated-cool vibes of the Labia.
LOVE love LOVE: After a superb dinner at Chef’s Warehouse at Tintswalo, I can recommend this sensational restaurant to all of you lovers of love. This one takes first place in the romance department, thatsfersure!
The setting is absolutely sublime. We were on a deck over the rocks, very comfortably distant from the only other table (also just two people) on the deck. The food is just superb, course after course of sensational, finely balanced and delectable combinations.
The wine list is fabulous and the service is excellent in a very understated way. It would be hard to say no to any question one might be asked in such surroundings … just saying.
And here is something I saw posted in Vredehoek Walkers to help work off all that excess. (I have not tried this out, being of a model that was built for comfort, not for speed; please do your own due diligence).

Back to School blues
With schools opening this week, we smiled at this shot by Lisa Malcomess of nostalgic former Cape Town High School students looking longingly over the wall.
Lisa says: “I took this photo while waiting at a robot outside Cape Town High School in Orange Street. Judging from the excited conversation, these guys were past students reminiscing about the good old days (probably just a year or two ago).”
Don’t panic South Africa, there are plenty of holidays to look forward to, starting with Friday 21 March 2025, Human Rights Day and then Easter, from 18 to 21 April.
Don’t forget the Australian Open is on this week. It’s in Melbourne so the schedule will play havoc with any attempts to get back to a regular sleep schedule. Go Coco!
