Spin Cycles, a big hit at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2023, comes home for its Cape Town premiere at The Baxter from 19 February to 1 March 2025. Written and performed by Jamie-Lee Money and directed by Larica Schnell, Spin Cycles is a one-person show βabout spinning, grief, love, healing and everything in betweenβ. Anyone who has seen a spin class (never mind joined one) will agree that it is not a stretch to see this cult-like exercise regime as a way of crystalising emotional trauma. Spin Cycles, I am told, will show you the cathartic side too. You got to laugh (apparently it is very, very funny, too).
βMerging the line between spin class and theatre, the show explores what it is about passionate exercise studios that gives us a feeling of purpose and the sense that everything that was once upside down, can be turned the right way up again,β says Jamie-Lee. More info and bookings
See you at the Baxter, Exercise Bunnies but, for the rest of it I will stick to the mat. While on the subject, I have been asked to share something happening a little in the distance that some of you more advanced yogis might like to start stretching and saving for:
Apart from being our favourite studio, The Loft is a Yoga Alliance Registered 300-hour Yoga School offering 3 x 100 hour modules throughout the year. More info
Something much less stressful that will potentially burn as many calories is the Mojo Swing Dance party with the Blue Shoes Swingtet Band and swing DJs on Thursday from 7pm. Entry is free.
Mojo Market is such a casual and cool place to hang out with friends. Everyone can eat and drink what they like from any of the many food stalls and bars (and you all get to avoid splitting a huge, messy bill at the end). Plus there is usually great live music.
Donβt knock it till youβve tried it: Kuier at the Castle is a thrift fest at the castle of Good Hope on Saturday 22 February, from 10am to 4pm. Some great bargains and interesting, crafty goods for sale, and excellent people watching
If you are looking for something super wholesome, join a walkabout with Farmer Angus on his farm on Sunday February 23 for a close-up look at regenerative farming. This tour is so very interesting and informative, and it is positively delightful to be in the countryside, seeing the happiest of hens and watching the pigs roll around happily in the mud.
Farmer Angusβs eggs are the only ones our household buys after seeing so many happy healthy hens on the farm.
The tour starts at 9am. All ages welcome. R50 per person, children go free. Meet at the farm office in the shed (click for pin). Email Farmer Angus farmerangus@protonmail.com to RSVP.

People are already complaining they canβt get tickets on the nights they want to see Faustus in Africa (Baxter Theatre, from 26 February):
A devilishly good idea ...
I got passed a little note from Lara Foot saying that William Kentridge and Handspring Puppet Companyβs classic, Faustus in Africa!, will be restaged at The Baxter Flipside from February 26 to March 22, 2025. I was aghast since I knew not of this collaboration.
Planning ahead: There is probably still time to get tickets for Breathwords (Artscape Opera House, March 25-27). To celebrate the companyβs first birthday, Cape Ballet Africa presents a triple bill of works featuring two choreographies by international creators, alongside a further development of Kirsten Isenbergβs gorgeous dreamlike meditation, Reverie, set to Rachmaninoffβs Piano Concerto No 2 (earlier version reviewed here: South Africans rock in salt)
